Social Studies Units/Assessments/Grading

Third Grade Social Studies is an elementary school curriculum that focuses on teaching students about the world around them, with an emphasis on history, geography, economics, and government. In this grade, students are introduced to concepts like basic map reading, American history, cultural diversity, and the principles of democracy. They also learn about community geography, basic economics, ancient civilizations, and the geography of the United States. Additionally, students learn about famous people, how they shaped the world we live in, and the significant changes that have occurred over time. Course Descriptions â€‹

How America Works - Students will identify the three branches of government and describe their responsibilities, define separation of powers and checks and balances, and become familiar with general academic and domain-specific vocabulary to deepen their understanding of social studies concepts.

 

Mapping Our World - Students will compare and contrast general location and exact location, use maps to find locations, and become familiar with general academic and domain-specific vocabulary to deepen their understanding of social studies concepts.

 

Settling the Land - Students will explain the ways in which physical geography influenced American Indian settlements, compare and contrast American Indian settlements in different regions, and become familiar with general academic and domain-specific vocabulary to deepen their understanding of social studies concepts.

 

Protecting Resources - Students will identify examples of natural resources and threats to natural resources, and become familiar with general academic and domain-specific vocabulary to deepen their understanding of social studies concepts.

 

Communities Change - Students will describe how and why communities have changed over time, and become familiar with general academic and domain-specific vocabulary to deepen their understanding of social studies concepts.

 

Amazing Inventions - Students will identify details about important inventions that have changed the world and the lives of different inventors, including Thomas Edison, explain the importance of patents, and become familiar with general academic and domain-specific vocabulary to deepen their understanding of social studies concepts.

 

Producers and Consumers - Students will define and give examples of producers, explain how the production of certain goods has changed over time, and become familiar with general academic and domain-specific vocabulary to deepen their understanding of social studies concepts.


U.S. Geography - Students will define geography and identify the different factors involved in its study, identify and describe mountains, valleys, plains, plateaus, deserts, islands, and other physical features, and become familiar with general academic and domain-specific vocabulary to deepen their understanding of social studies concepts.
